BENGALURU: In probably what is a first, Network18’s English news channel CNN News18 headed the Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly list of top 5 English news channels - NCCS AB : Males 22+ Individuals for week 22 of 2019 (Saturday, 25 May 2019 to Friday, 31 May 2019, week under review). Exit Opinion polls and the national election results were announced in week 21 of 2019, a week in which the combined weekly impressions of the top 5 English news channels more than doubled (went up by 122 percent) as compared to the previous week 20 of 2019. However, the combined weekly impressions of the top 5 English news channels were probably the highest ever at 6.442 million weekly impressions in week 22 of 2019, the week just after the elections results were announced.

Rank one has been the bastion of either the Arnab Goswami headed Republic TV or pubcaster Doordarshan’s English News channel DD India in 2019 until now. All the channels in BARC’s weekly list in week 22 of 2019 were same as those in week 21, but with a shuffle in ranks in the week under review as compared  to the past.

As mentioned above, CNN News18 was ranked first in week 22 of 2019 in BARC’s list of top 5 English news channels with a massive 2.173 million weekly insertions which were almost triple (2.8 times) the 0.772 million weekly impressions the channel had scored in the previous week. Week 22 of 2019 viewership was probably the highest the cannel has ever garnered

CNN News18 was followed by Republic TV, which also scored a massive 1.827 million weekly impressions  in week 22 of 2019 which were about 29 percent more than the 1.414 million weekly impressions in week 21. Republic TV was ranked first in week 21 of 2019. The channel has scored higher weekly impressions in the past.

At third rank was Times Now in week 22 of 2019 with a 13.5 percent increase in viewership at 1.201 million weekly impressions as compared to second rank and 1.058 million weekly impressions in week 21.

At fourth rank was DD India with 0.704 million weekly impressions in week 22 of 2019 as compared to third rank and 0.884 million weekly impressions in the previous week.

Completing the quintet at fifth rank was India Today Television with 0.537 million weekly impressions as compared to fourth rank and 0.856 million weekly impressions in week 21.
