Kolkata children design Sunfeast Tennis Open trophy

MUMBAI: For the first time ever in the history of Indian sports, school children have been involved in designing the trophy for an international tournament.

The event in question is the Sunfeast Open 2005, the international women's tennis tournament to be held in Kolkata from 19 September to 25 September 2005. As had been reported earlier by Indiantelevision.com, the event will air on Ten Sports.

Radio Mirchi is the official radio partner for the Sunfeast Open 2005. With the aim to connect with one of the key audiences, Sunfeast had announced a talent hunt contest inviting school children in Kolkata to showcase their talent by designing a trophy for the Sunfeast Open 2005. 10,500 children presented ideas for the trophy. Ipsita's winning entry will now have the honour of being the inspiration behind the final trophy design for the forthcoming Sunfeast Open 2005. The mascot for the event was also unveiled.

ITC Foods CEO Ravi Naware says, "It is very heartening to see this level of participation in the Sunfeast tournament. Ever since our association with this sporting spectacle it has been our endeavour to establish a complete connect with the sports loving populace of Kolkata. Incorporating the valuable and creative inputs from the winning entry in the final design of the trophy will further impart a Kolkatan flavour to this tournament making it an event that truly belongs to the city in every possible way. The unveiling of the loveable Sunfeast mascot for the tournament too will lend another emotional connect for the citizens of Kolkata with the Sunfeast Open 2005."

Ipsita Saha from St. John's Diocesan Girls H.S. School won the contest. Ipsita will get the opportunity to appear on Ten Sports during the telecast and the schools with the maximum percentage participation in this contest will be honoured with a visit by one of the two Indian tennis players - current Wimbledon mixed doubles winner Mahesh Bhupathi or new tennis sensation Sania Mirza.
