Amit Dhawan on a mission to create the best marketing team ever for Schbang Delhi

He talks in detail about his new role and responsibilities at the agency’s latest outpost.

NEW DELHI: Continuing the legacy that this young and dynamic creative and technology transformation company has created in the digital marketing space, Schbang has recently thrown open its doors in the Delhi-NCR region with a brand new office space. The aim is to serve the existing north India-based clients better and rope in newer names into its roster. However, for the man leading this new setup, the immediate goal is to form a team like no other. 

In a recent telephonic conversation with Indiantelevision.com, Amit Dhawan shared, “We are not aiming to be the biggest agency in the city, right now. Our aim is to create the greatest team in the city, create a flourishing culture, and grow into a post-agnostic organisation that can help every single person in the group grow.” 

He added that a well-trained and motivated team will eventually help them serve their clients better. “Our team shouldn’t just follow the client briefs and blindly do what they are asked to. In fact, they must be capable of understanding the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of each client’s unique requirements.” 

Therefore, he is currently putting all his attention and energy into building a robust team of knowledge-hungry people who are passionate about marketing. It doesn’t matter what their backgrounds are or how much experience they have. 

Dhawan, who is an ITM University graduate, himself comes from an engineering background. He started his career at Samsung as a trainee engineer but soon realised that this was not something he could do for life. 

“I joined a company called Mr Right in 2015 as an intern to explore the marketing world. There I happened to learn a lot about technology and business development. That’s where I developed my interest in digital marketing. After that, I worked with a few more start-ups before Sociowash happened. It was a major leap for me and I grew immensely there. I saw that company literally starting from scratch and just within half a decade, getting names like Panasonic and Casio in its clientele,” he elaborated. 

On his decision to join Schbang, Dhawan shared that he knew Harshil Karia (founder) for quite a while and was motivated by his work and his commitment to the society beyond that as well. “Under him, Schbang has grown meteorically and that too by keeping its core culture intact. He is building a global company sitting here in India. Also, things that he is doing beyond work are quite inspirational. I was very excited to work closely with and get mentored by him.”

For his own leadership style, Dhawan is working on creating a connected and motivated team. He wants each member of the team to be accessible to one another. 

“I learned the importance of letting people take ownership of work irrespective of their age or experience at my first job. That’s something I would like to continue here. From Sociowash, I have taken the spirit of creating a people-focused culture, which is on priority for me right now,” he said. 

However, he is still trying to figure out a fine balance between the resources he is appointing and the sort of business the agency is getting. “The biggest challenge right now is to ensure that we hire people suiting business needs. I don’t want it to be a situation where we have great resources but not the kind of work that they are experienced in.”

With this in mind, he has created a quarter-wise approach to build the team and is accepting work offers from only the brands that they can serve with their capabilities. 

Said he: “This quarter, I am working on filling our creative requirements, next quarter will be about building a strong media offering like the teams in Mumbai and Bengaluru have. Obviously, they will be assisting us in projects till then and also mentoring the lot we will hire here for the Delhi office. Next on the agenda is to build a functional production team for motion pictures and photography. That’s how the year looks to us right now.”

Dhawan is open to hiring a remote workforce, which can contribute to client needs from anywhere in the world. In fact, he is a supporter of a hybrid working model where people come to the office only when it is necessary. 

The dynamic professional is quite excited to build this agency from the ground up and make it as successful as its Mumbai and Bengaluru counterparts. It seems like a focused and well-planned approach will support his dream quite well.
