Ten Sports to telecast WC qualifiers featuring Brazil & Argentina

MUMBAI, October 11: Latin American soccer magic continues on Ten Sports, when the world’s No 1 sports channel for South Asians brings live action from the latest round of South American World Cup Qualifying matches featuring defending world champions Brazil and Argentina.

Brazil will be at home against Venezuela on Wednesday, while Argentina will be traveling to Uruguay on the same day. Both teams have qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, but the matches assume great significance for both teams as they are sure to try out new combinations.

The live telecast of the Brazil-Venezuela match from Mane Garrincha Stadium in Belem will start at 6:00 am (IST) on Thursday, October 13, and will be followed by the Argentina-Uruguay match from Centenario Stadium at Montevideo, which will be delayed live and kicks off at 10:30 am (IST). For those who miss the live action, the full match will be repeated on Ten Sports later in the week.

In their latest matches played earlier this week, a new look Brazilian side was held to a 1-1 draw by Boilivia playing away, while Argentina looked scratchy in their 2-0 victory at home over Peru. Riquelme scored off a penalty for Argentina, who also enjoyed a last-minute own goal by Peru’s Guadalupe.

Argentina currently leads the table with 34 points from 17 matches with ten wins and three losses. Brazil is second, three points behind Argentina, after their draw against Peru with eight wins and two losses from similar number of matches. Paraguay (28 pts, 17 matches, eight wins, five losses), Ecuador (27 pts, 17 matches, eight wins, six losses), and Uruguay (22 pts, 17 matches, five wins, five losses) are the next three teams.

The top four teams out of ten in the South American zone qualify directly for 2006 World Cup. The fifth placed team goes into a play-off against the winners of the Oceanic zone. Which makes Uruguay’s match against Argentina all the more important. Uruguay are just one point ahead of Colombia and Chile, who will take on Paraguay and Ecuador respectively on the same day.
