HONG KONG: The Star Group has signed an agreement to form a strategic alliance with Hunan Broadcast Group. The agreement represents a framework for joint financing and co-production of television programmes in the worlds fastest growing media market.

Star Groups' CEO James Murdoch was quoted as saying in an official release, "The agreement further broadens and deepens our development in China. We are very excited to be partnering with Hunan TV, one of China's most innovative and dynamic broadcast groups."

The release adds that News Corp has long sought to expand its footprint in China, where foreign TV channels are mostly limited to luxury hotels, residences designated for foreigners and other special venues approved by the state. Reports also state that the Hunan deal is the first time China has given approval to a foreign media organisation for comprehensive cooperation with a Chinese partner.

A Hunan official said the cooperation did not involve any money exchanging hands.

The Hunan Broadcast Group owns eight television channels including the nationally top-rated popular Hunan Satellite TV, as per the release.
