Apple, Nokia in deal for mobile web browser

MUMBAI: Nokia has associated with the California-headquartered Apple Computers for developing an open-source web browser for its smartphone software, the Series 60 Platform.

The project will combine Nokia's Series 60 platform with the WebCore and JavaScript components used in the Apple browser, which leverages KHTML and KJS technology from KDE's Konqueror open-source project. Both companies are further committing to open-source development, with Nokia contributing its mobile know-how.

The software uses the same open-source components, WebCore and JavaScriptCore, that are found in Apple's Safari web browser. All the features currently present in the Series 60 browser will be available in the new product. Nokia expects to add more features to enhance the browsing experience for its users, too.

According to officials, the new mobile browser will be available starting early next year.
