Sports and fun come together for kids with their favourite star Chamki

MUMBAI: As the world relishes the wide spread Football Mania with the FIFA World Cup 2010 reaching its climax, children in Delhi were given a special treat by Galli Galli Sim Sim‘s very own Chamki. The energetic and health conscious Chamki joined kids in Delhi for a special screening of the first quarter final of the tournament between the five time champion Brasil and the ever stylish Netherlands at The O Experience in New Delhi today.

The evening saw Delhi celebs with their kids enjoying the screening along with Chamki. Present at occasion were Monisha Bajaj and Anil Lepps, Jattin Kochhar with his family, Priti S. Kapoor with her kids, Taniya Khanuja with her son, Sonalika Sahay with her family, Charu Parashar with her family, Shibani Kashyap with her niece and Hemant and Nandita.

The special screening initiative was a part of Galli Galli Sim Sim‘s efforts in helping spread the importance of health and fitness. There is a critical need to foster healthy habits in young children in India. While on the one hand, a large cross section of the population lacks basic healthcare. On the other hand, rapid economic growth and liberalization has resulted in changes in the quality of food availability, adding the burden of childhood obesity. 8.5% and 29% children between the ages of 6 to 18 years are overweight in urban areas, with higher prevalence among children from high socioeconomic classes. Various studies from middle and upper middle class schools in metropolitan cities find a third of all children overweight.

With over 128 million preschool-age children in India, it is imperative to foster good nutrition and health habits in the early years, which will lead to lifelong healthy behaviors. The lovable and popular muppet, Chamki from Galli Galli Sim Sim is a great role model for children to inculcate healthy habits. The Galli Galli Sim Sim television show that airs on three of India‘s leading television channels: daily on POGO and Cartoon Network and weekly on Doordarshan, the terrestrial broadcaster reaches over 11 million children every year. The television show is complemented by an educational outreach that reaches out to over 500,000 children resident in the urban slums of India. Galli Galli Sim Sim facilitates young Indian children‘s basic academic skills as well as life skills, while celebrating India‘s rich cultural diversity, in order to promote their overall learning, health, and development.

The evening witnessed enthusiastic sports and football fans, between the ages of 4-11 years, enjoying the match with Chamki and indulging in some football games and trivia. The affable and much loved muppet sent out the message of staying fit by encouraging kids to exercise and play sports for at least an hour everyday.

Keeping in sync with the importance of health and fitness, The O Experience served healthy and nutritious drinks and snacks for the children.
