ISRO plans interlinked network of satellites

BANGALORE: ISRO (The Indian Space Research Organisation) is planning to build a network of existing and new satellites - a regional constellation of existing and future satellites linked to each other.

Reportedly, the regional network would provide India with its own GPS, which could be used to forecast the weather, monitor road and rail traffic and help in the banking sector for quick transfer of money. The constellation of satellites project called GLONASS had been a part of the agreement with the Russians who had put up 17 satellites so far under this project.

At present India is using the GPS controlled by the US as a partner. However to prompt denial of signals for defence purposes, India needed its own navigational satellite constellation in place.
