From Manikchand to Swarup Filmfare awards

MUMBAI: The golden jubilee Filmfare Awards this year has found a new sponsor. The Swarup Group of Industries owned by Guru Swarup Srivastava has replaced "gutka" baron Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal as the title sponsor for India's oldest and most established film awards event.

Bennett Coleman and Company, owners of Filmfare magazine and the annual awards that bears its title, discontinued the sponsorship of Dhariwal Industries after accusations that the group's promoter had links with India's most wanted underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Both Dhariwal and Srivastava have been in the news recently for some extravagant purchases. If Dhariwal hit the headlines after he bought his daughter a Rs 50 million Maybach super luxury limo as a birthday present, Srivastava - who started out as a scientist from Dayalbagh, Agra - is the same person who recently entered into a deal to buy 125 MF Hussain paintings for Rs 1 billion.

It is pertinent to note that Srivastava was already a co-sponsor of the Filmfare Awards.
