Shemaroo TV brings back B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat to prime time
Iconic mythological series to air daily at 7 pm from 14 September as channel targets family viewing
MUMBAI: Shemaroo TV is bringing back B.R. Chopra’s iconic Mahabharat to television, with the mythological series set to premiere on 14 September at 7 pm.
The series will air daily in the prime-time slot as Shemaroo TV looks to strengthen its mythology-led content strategy and attract family audiences during the festive and high-viewership season.
Originally created by filmmaker B.R. Chopra, Mahabharat remains one of Indian television’s most recognisable mythological properties. Its return is part of Shemaroo TV’s broader strategy of using high-recall and proven intellectual properties to strengthen its prime-time offering and encourage family co-viewing.
The series brings together a familiar cast of characters and an epic narrative that has continued to resonate across generations. Shemaroo TV is positioning its return as an opportunity for audiences who watched the original broadcast to revisit the series, while introducing the story to younger viewers.
Mythology and devotional programming have long been central to Shemaroo TV’s content mix. The channel has previously featured titles including Ramayan, Shri Krishna, Jai Ganga Maiya, Mahakaali, Kamdhenu – Gau Mata and Mata Saraswati, and Shani Dev.

Shemaroo Entertainment COO, broadcasting Sandeep Gupta said the series remains part of India’s collective cultural memory and continues to have relevance across generations. He added that its daily prime-time placement is intended to strengthen viewer engagement across the channel’s target audiences.
The return of Mahabharat also highlights Shemaroo TV’s continued focus on classic IP as a lever for prime-time growth, particularly among households looking for familiar, culturally rooted programming.
