MUMBAI: Forget the red carpet chatter, the numbers tell their own story. Nielsen’s latest analysis of Emmy nominated programmes has crowned the true viewership winners ahead of the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, and the results make for fascinating reading on what America actually watched between June 2025 and May 2026.

Topping the outstanding drama series category is HBO Max’s The Pitt, which racked up nearly 400 million viewing hours, a genuinely staggering number. The show’s second season actually outperformed its first, and the series ranked as the second most watched original programme and third among all streaming shows through the first half of 2026, proof that medical dramas still have serious pulling power.

In comedy, ABC’s Abbott Elementary held onto pole position for a second straight year, clocking 181 million viewing hours while performing steadily across ABC, Hulu and Disney+, a reminder that broad, multi-platform distribution still moves the needle.

Netflix kept its grip on the limited series category too, with The Beast in Me claiming top spot on the back of a strong run in late 2025, extending the streamer’s dominance in the prestige limited drama space.

Reality television had its own storylines. CBS’s Survivor, riding the buzz of its landmark 50th season, took the outstanding reality competition crown for the second consecutive year and cracked the streaming top 10 for the first time. Dancing with the Stars came second, while Peacock’s The Traitors rounded out the podium with nearly 129 million viewing hours through June, evidence that reality format nostalgia and psychological game shows both still command loyal audiences.

On the movie front, Prime Video’s Heads of State led outstanding movie viewership, narrowly ahead of Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures and People We Meet on Vacation, both of which logged around 37 million viewing hours each, a genuinely tight race at the top.

The figures, compiled by Nielsen using Gracenote StudioSystem data, cover total viewing across broadcast, cable and streaming during the full Emmy eligibility window, offering the industry a rare, comprehensive look at how nominated content actually performed with audiences rather than just critics.
