MUMBAI: The next round of Street Fighter may already be taking shape on the page, but whether Ryu and Ken return for another cinematic showdown will depend on how audiences respond to their first outing. Director Kitao Sakurai has confirmed that work on a potential sequel is under way, although he is keeping the final bell firmly out of reach until the upcoming film proves its mettle at the box office.

Speaking to MovieWeb, Sakurai said the team is developing ideas for a follow-up but is not ready to commit to another instalment. The plans would continue the adventures of Ryu and Ken beyond the events of the second World Warrior Tournament, though their next fight on the big screen is far from guaranteed.

“It’s something that we’re thinking about and developing,” Sakurai told the publication. “I don’t want to say anything that locks us in. It also kind of depends on how people react to this one, and whether they, you know, support this vision of the story. We definitely have a lot of ideas, and we’re writing currently, but you know, I wouldn’t want to make any promises one way or the other about what exactly we’re gonna do.”

The message is clear: the creative groundwork is being laid, but the audience will have the deciding vote. For now, a sequel remains a possibility rather than a confirmed project, with ticket sales and fan reception likely to influence whether Capcom’s fighting-game universe gets another cinematic round.

The upcoming Street Fighter film is also set to explore the history behind two of its central fighters through animated sequences. These scenes will delve into Ryu and Ken’s backstory with their mentor, Gouken, and his brother, Akuma, adding another layer to the characters’ journey beyond the arena.

The animation has already attracted positive reactions from fans who have seen the material, with viewers praising its art style and fluid movement. That early enthusiasm could help build anticipation for the film, although the broader response will become clearer when it reaches cinemas.

There is also a notable question mark in the film’s marketing: Sagat. The character has not appeared in the trailers or advertisements released so far, and no casting announcement has been made for him. His absence has fuelled speculation among fans about whether he could become a significant presence in a possible sequel.

With the Street Fighter games offering a deep roster of fighters and rivalries, a second film could explore several directions. However, Sakurai has not confirmed which characters might feature in a follow-up, leaving fans to speculate while the first film prepares for its theatrical debut.

Sakurai’s comments also underline the commercial calculation behind franchise filmmaking. Even when filmmakers are already developing ideas for another chapter, a sequel typically needs a strong enough audience response to justify the investment. In this case, the director has made it clear that enthusiasm for the film’s interpretation of the Street Fighter universe will be central to any decision.

The film arrives at a time when video-game adaptations continue to draw attention from studios and audiences, but success with one franchise does not automatically guarantee another instalment. Capcom’s Resident Evil adaptation, directed by Zach Cregger, has also been part of the conversation around the company’s cinematic properties. While that film was broadly well received by audiences and critics, Cregger has said he would “never” make another franchise film, making the prospect of a sequel uncertain for different reasons.

For Street Fighter, the immediate focus remains on its first theatrical outing. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on 16 October 2026, with the cast and creative team hoping to translate the game’s long-running appeal into a successful big-screen experience.

Sakurai has therefore stopped short of promising fans another tournament. The writing may already be in progress, but until audiences show up and back his vision, the sequel will remain a fight that has yet to be officially called.
