NEW DELHI: Updating your Aadhaar just got a little less inbox-ing. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a free facility that allows residents to add or update their email ID directly through the Aadhaar App, removing the need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre.

The service became available on 1 July and will remain free for six months, marking another step in UIDAI’s efforts to make Aadhaar services more accessible through digital channels. The initiative is part of the government’s broader push to improve citizen services under the Digital India programme and support its vision of Viksit Bharat.

The response has been swift. According to UIDAI, more than 2.5 lakh residents updated their email addresses within the first two days of the feature going live, reflecting growing adoption of the revamped Aadhaar App.

Linking an email ID with Aadhaar enables users to receive real-time email alerts whenever an Aadhaar authentication request is processed. The authority says this enhances transparency while adding another layer of security by keeping Aadhaar holders informed about how and when their identity is being used.

The email update feature builds on the Aadhaar App’s growing list of digital services. Users can already update their mobile number and address directly from their smartphones without visiting a physical centre. UIDAI said more than four million mobile numbers have been updated through the app so far, while around one million residents have used it to change their address details.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has encouraged Aadhaar holders to take advantage of the free email update window by downloading or updating the Aadhaar App, which is available on both Android and iOS devices.

The latest enhancement continues UIDAI’s drive to shift more Aadhaar services onto mobile devices, making routine updates faster and reducing dependence on physical enrolment centres as India’s digital identity ecosystem continues to evolve.
