Reliance Group denies allegations made by Essel Group’s Subhash Chandra
The group denies its media brands were ever used as weapons, and says it still holds the Essel Group chairman in high regard
MUMBAI: Corporate feuds rarely stay behind closed doors for long, and this one has now spilled fully into public view. The Reliance Group has issued a formal statement rejecting allegations made by Essel Group chairman Subhash Chandra against its media entities, dismissing the claims as baseless and describing them with evident irritation as allegations and insinuations it strongly denies.
The statement is unambiguous in its framing. Reliance insists its media brands have never been deployed to attack anyone and never will be, a line clearly aimed at pushing back on any suggestion that its journalism arm has been weaponised for corporate ends. That is about as direct a denial as a spokesperson’s statement gets, and it leaves little room for ambiguity on where the group stands.
What softens the edges, at least on the surface, is the closing note. Reliance says it continues to hold Chandra in high regard as a businessman and entrepreneur, and wishes him well, a courteous sign-off that sits somewhat awkwardly against the sharpness of the denial preceding it. Whether that combination of firm rebuttal and gracious closing line cools the spat or simply marks the opening exchange of a longer public dispute remains to be seen.
