MUMBAI: It is a case of adding some more balance to the balance sheet of governance. Muthoot FinCorp Limited has appointed Sarah M. George as an independent director on its Board, bringing more than three decades of experience in audit, assurance, governance and strategic leadership.

The appointment comes as the financial services company looks to deepen its institutional capabilities and strengthen independent oversight at the Board level.

George, a Chartered Accountant, qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in 1990. She brings over 35 years of professional experience, having worked with leading audit and assurance organisations including S R Batliboi, Haribhakti & Co. and Price Waterhouse.

She joined Price Waterhouse in March 2012 and went on to hold several senior leadership positions. These included all India assurance markets leader and west region assurance leader, alongside serving as deputy strategy leader for the Americas and Asia Pacific region.

George was elected to the India Board of Price Waterhouse in December 2018 and remained on the Board until March 2023. She also served as D&I leader for the India West region and as chief presiding officer of the Internal Complaints Committee for the firm’s regulated entities.

Her professional experience covers both Indian and multinational organisations, across listed and unlisted businesses. Her sector exposure includes EPC, manufacturing, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, retail, IT, consumer products, engineering, shipping and services.

For Muthoot FinCorp, the appointment adds a senior voice with experience spanning financial controls, corporate governance and business strategy, areas that are increasingly important as financial institutions expand their scale and reach.

Commenting on the appointment, Muthoot FinCorp Limited chairman and managing director Thomas John Muthoot said George’s professional experience, governance expertise and strategic perspective would bring valuable independent insight to the Board.

He added that the company remained focused on building a robust governance framework to support responsible and sustainable growth, while expressing confidence that George’s independent judgement would contribute to the company’s long-term direction.

Muthoot FinCorp Limited chief executive officer Shaji Varghese said George’s background in audit, assurance, governance and strategic leadership would add depth to Board deliberations.

The company said strong governance and effective independent oversight remain priorities as it continues to expand its operations.

Muthoot FinCorp is the flagship company of the Muthoot Pappachan Group (MPG). It operates a network of more than 3,800 branches across India, with a strong presence in semi-urban and rural markets. The company offers a range of financial products and services aimed at improving financial access and wellbeing.

With George joining the Board, Muthoot FinCorp is adding not just another independent voice, but one with a long track record of navigating the numbers, strategy and governance that sit behind sustainable growth.
