Jio AirFiber: How Fixed Wireless Access is Changing Home Internet
Picture a household where the only internet comes from a mobile data connection shared across four people: two school-going children attending online classes, a parent on a video call, and someone trying to stream anything at all. The signal drops. The class freezes. The call cuts. This is not a rare scenario in India, where nearly 300 million homes remain without access to high-speed internet, and where laying underground fibre cables through every narrow lane, difficult terrain, and remote settlement is neither quick nor always physically possible. Fixed Wireless Access technology exists to solve exactly that problem, and Jio AirFiber is India’s most widely deployed version of it.
For households already on a broadband plan, Bajaj Pay, the BBPS-enabled payments platform on Bajaj Finance, makes monthly bill settlement straightforward, supporting broadband payments across UPI, debit and credit cards, net banking, and Bajaj Pay Wallet.
What Fixed Wireless Access Actually Means
Traditional Jio fibre broadband travels to a home through optical cables buried underground or running along utility poles, all the way from an exchange to the building. The process requires civil work, permissions, and time. In apartments, developers or housing societies often need to agree to cable routing. In villages, the question of whether cables will arrive at all has historically had no clear answer.
Fixed Wireless Access removes the cable from the equation entirely. The signal travels as a radio wave from a 5G tower to a small receiver installed at the consumer’s premises. No digging. No right-of-way negotiations. The connection is established through the air, using the same 5G network that already carries mobile data. As long as a compatible tower is within range, the service can be delivered.
Jio AirFiber is Jio’s 5G Fixed Wireless Access service for homes. Per Jio’s official AirFiber page, the service is currently available across 7,722 towns in India, with plan speeds reaching up to 1 Gbps on higher tiers.
The CPE: What Gets Installed
CPE stands for Customer Premises Equipment. For Jio AirFiber, this is a two-unit system, as described on Jio’s official AirFiber page:
- Outdoor Unit (ODU): A compact antenna mounted on an exterior wall, balcony railing, or terrace. It faces the nearest Jio 5G tower and receives the wireless signal. Clear line-of-sight between the ODU and the tower is important. Upper floors in a building typically get stronger reception than ground-level units, since there is less physical obstruction between the antenna and the tower.
- Indoor Unit (IDU): The Wi-Fi router inside the home. It connects to the ODU through a single cable that carries both power and data, and distributes the internet signal across the household. The indoor router supports Wi-Fi 6, which handles multiple connected devices, including smart TVs, laptops, and phones, without meaningful speed loss.
- 4K Set-Top Box: Included with the service for television access. It supports 800-plus digital channels across more than 15 languages, a CatchUp TV feature for missed episodes, and integration with OTT platforms through the JioTV+ app on up to two smart TVs simultaneously.
Installation is carried out by a Jio technician and typically takes 15 to 30 minutes, covering mounting, alignment, and account activation. Installation is offered free of cost on annual plans. A refundable security deposit covers the outdoor unit and router for the duration of the subscription.
Plan Tiers and What They Include
Jio AirFiber plans sit across two ranges. Standard AirFiber covers everyday home usage across three tiers, while AirFiber Max serves heavier bandwidth demands, larger households, or users who stream, game, and work simultaneously across multiple devices. All plans include 800-plus digital TV channels, CatchUp TV, and the 4K set-top box. All prices exclude 18% GST.
Standard AirFiber Plans
| Speed | Data | OTT Benefits | Monthly Charge |
| 30 Mbps | 1,000 GB | JioCinema, Sony LIV, Disney+ Hotstar, ZEE5 and 8 more | Rs. 599 + GST |
| 100 Mbps | 1,000 GB | JioCinema, Sony LIV, Disney+ Hotstar, ZEE5 and 8 more | Rs. 899 + GST |
| 100 Mbps | 1,000 GB | Netflix Basic, Amazon Prime and all of the above | Rs. 1,199 + GST |
The Rs. 599 plan suits households with moderate usage across two to three devices. The Rs. 899 plan steps up to 100 Mbps without adding premium OTT costs, making it the practical middle ground. The Rs. 1,199 tier adds Netflix Basic and Amazon Prime, which makes it cost-effective for anyone already paying for those subscriptions separately.
AirFiber Max Plans
| Speed | Data | OTT Benefits | Monthly Charge |
| 300 Mbps | 1,000 GB | JioCinema, Sony LIV, Disney+ Hotstar, ZEE5 and more | Rs. 1,499 + GST |
| 500 Mbps | 1,000 GB | Netflix Standard, Amazon Prime and all of the above | Rs. 2,499 + GST |
| 1 Gbps | 1,000 GB | Netflix Standard, Amazon Prime and all of the above | Rs. 3,999 + GST |
AirFiber Max plans are built for homes where multiple people stream in 4K, transfer large files, or rely on the connection for professional-grade tasks. The 1 Gbps tier, available in areas with strong 5G coverage, delivers speeds comparable to a wired gigabit fibre connection without any of the cable infrastructure.
