Flipkart gives old appliances a retirement home in Big Billion Days campaign

22feet turns appliance exchange into a playful story of long-serving home companions

MUMBAI: Old habits die hard, and apparently, so do old appliances. Flipkart has given ageing household appliances a rather unusual retirement plan with its new ‘Home for Old Age Appliances’ (HOAA) campaign for the Big Billion Days Sale.

Conceptualised by 22feet, part of Omnicom Advertising India, the campaign imagines a retirement home where refrigerators, mixers, laptops and other long-serving appliances can finally put their feet up after years of service.

The campaign takes a playful turn on the usual home appliance advertising playbook, which typically revolves around features, upgrades, discounts and new launches. Instead, HOAA gives everyday appliances personalities, quirks and routines, turning the familiar act of exchanging an old product into a story worth watching.

At the heart of the idea is a familiar Indian habit: holding on to appliances well beyond their prime. Whether it is another repair, a quick patch-up or simply finding a way to keep an old machine going, consumers often delay upgrading products that have been part of their homes for years.

Flipkart’s campaign turns that behaviour on its head with a simple question: if these appliances have spent years taking care of people’s homes, where would they go when it is finally time to replace them?

The answer is the fictional Home for Old Age Appliances, a retirement space designed around their personalities and needs. The idea allows Flipkart to frame appliance exchange as more than a straightforward transaction. It becomes a fond farewell for an old household companion while making room for something new.

During Big Billion Days, consumers can also avail an exchange bonus over and above the value offered for their old appliance, giving them an additional incentive to make the switch.

“People also connect emotionally to their appliances. That’s one of the reasons they are always a little hesitant to upgrade,” said 22feet chief creative experience officer Vishnu Srivatsav.

“We wanted to speak to this behaviour, but with a typical Flipkart take. So we asked ourselves, what if your beloved appliance was not simply discarded, but went to a happy place instead? And the Home for Old Age Appliances was born,” he added.

The campaign also moved beyond the screen with an on-ground activation at North Studio in Mumbai on 3 and 4 October. The experience brought the fictional retirement home to life, inviting visitors to explore spaces built around the imagined needs and quirks of ageing appliances.

The activation featured a recreation area, themed bar and wellness space, with each setting adding another layer to the campaign’s central joke. Appliances known for making strange noises were given a karaoke zone, while laptops were offered a yoga space to help them stay flexible in retirement. Mixers, meanwhile, got a space where nobody would ask them to lower their voice.

Visitors could also pose for photographs at the end of the experience, taking away a keepsake from their visit.

By turning appliance exchange into a send-off rather than a simple upgrade, Flipkart is using Big Billion Days to put a fresh spin on an otherwise familiar retail message. The campaign’s retirement home may be fictional, but its pitch is simple: sometimes, even an old appliance deserves a proper goodbye.
