NEW DELHI: Old roots, a fresh pour. Diageo India has unveiled a refreshed visual identity and upgraded blend for McDowell’s No.1, as the 125-year-old brand looks to keep pace with changing consumer expectations and the growing premiumisation of India’s whisky market.

The revamp combines a redesigned bottle and contemporary packaging with a revised blend featuring select imported Scotch, Indian malts and premium grain spirits. According to the company, the blend is matured in select oak and American barrels, drawing on blending expertise spanning India and Scotland.

The latest evolution is aimed at strengthening McDowell’s No.1’s position in the mass-premium segment, where consumers increasingly look for quality, craftsmanship and an enhanced brand experience alongside affordability.

The redesigned bottle and updated visual identity are intended to give the brand a more distinctive and premium presence on retail shelves while retaining the familiarity associated with its longstanding market presence.

The transformation follows consumer research conducted across 11 markets, involving more than 10,000 consumers, which Diageo India cited as a key input in its approach to evolving the brand for a new generation.

The research-led approach reflects the challenge facing established beverage alcohol brands: modernising their offerings to appeal to changing preferences without losing the recognition and trust built over decades.

Ruchira Jaitly, chief marketing officer at Diageo India, said the evolution responds to changing expectations around quality, craftsmanship and experience while preserving the trust and familiarity the brand has built over the years.

With annual sales of more than 30 million cases, McDowell’s No.1 remains a significant player in India’s beverage alcohol market. Its latest makeover seeks to build on that scale and heritage as premiumisation reshapes consumer expectations across the whisky category.

The relaunch marks another chapter in the brand’s 125-year journey, bringing together an upgraded blend and a contemporary identity as Diageo India looks to keep a familiar name relevant to today’s consumers.
