X rebuilds Android app from scratch to speed up features

MUMBAI: Sometimes the fastest upgrade begins with hitting the reset button. X has rebuilt its Android application from the ground up, replacing its existing app with an entirely new architecture as the company looks to deliver a smoother user experience while speeding up the rollout of future features.

Rather than continuing with incremental software updates, the social media platform opted for a complete redesign of its Android client. The company said the new framework removes years of accumulated technical debt, simplifying development and providing a stronger foundation for long-term product innovation.

The overhaul follows persistent feedback from Android users, many of whom had reported slower performance than the platform’s iOS app. Over the past year, users flagged issues including sluggish navigation, delayed notifications and slow loading of shared posts.

According to Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, rebuilding the application required a substantial engineering effort but would create a more scalable platform for future development. The redesigned app is expected to offer smoother scrolling, faster response times and improved stability across supported Android devices.

The architectural overhaul is also designed to shorten product development cycles. X said upcoming features including enhanced video creation tools, richer interaction formats and additional personalisation options will be introduced more quickly on the rebuilt platform.

The company also plans to continue optimising the application for older Android smartphones, while expanding support for Spaces, its live audio feature, through future updates.

The Android revamp comes as X broadens its ambitions beyond social networking. With services such as X Chat and X Money becoming part of its wider ecosystem, the company is placing greater emphasis on a mobile platform capable of supporting multiple products and services from a single codebase.

With Android accounting for the largest share of the global smartphone market, the redesign represents more than a routine software refresh. It marks a strategic effort by X to improve user engagement, reduce engineering complexity and deliver new features at a faster pace as competition among digital platforms continues to intensify.
