WhatsApp expands beyond mobile with browser calling, call transfer and waiting rooms
New calling features bring browser support, smoother switching and improved video quality
New Delhi: WhatsApp is expanding its calling experience with a raft of new features, including audio and video calling directly from web browsers, as the messaging platform looks to make switching between devices more seamless.
The biggest addition is web calling, which allows users to make and receive one-on-one as well as group audio and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web, without downloading the desktop application.
The browser-based experience includes features already available on mobile and desktop, such as screen sharing, reactions and a dedicated Calls tab that stores call history and favourites. WhatsApp said all web calls remain end-to-end encrypted, with no time limits or additional charges.
The platform has also introduced call transfer, enabling users to move an ongoing group call from one device to another without disconnecting. For example, a call started on a smartphone or tablet can be transferred to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app for a larger-screen experience, or switched back to a mobile device while on the move.
To give users more control over group conversations, WhatsApp has launched a waiting room feature. When creating a call link, hosts can enable a “Require approval to join” option, allowing participants to enter a virtual waiting room until they are admitted.
The company has also enhanced video quality with QuickHD, which delivers high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call instead of requiring users to wait for the quality to improve.
Another addition is noise suppression, designed to reduce background sounds and make voices clearer during calls in busy or noisy environments. Users can switch the feature on or off through the in-call settings.
WhatsApp said the new calling features will roll out gradually and will become available to all users over the coming weeks, further strengthening the platform’s push to make voice and video communication easier across devices.
