Six new OTT releases to watch this weekend

MUMBAI: The weekend watchlist has officially entered its plot-twist era. From an inventor’s extraordinary life and a lawyer fighting her own battles to supernatural clues, police brutality and Cold War espionage, six new titles that began streaming between September 4 and September 6 offer plenty of genre-hopping for viewers staying in.

GDN brings a biographical drama centred on legendary Indian inventor G D Naidu. Starring R Madhavan, Priyamani, Sathyaraj and Jayaram Subramaniam, the film traces Naidu’s journey, his innovations and the challenges that tested his resilience and belief in progress. It began streaming on Netflix on September 4.

Crime takes centre stage in DC, which follows Devadas and his companions as they try to protect an innocent family whose lives have been devastated by police brutality. With a ruthless police officer pursuing them, the group must evade the authorities while keeping the family safe. Lokesh Kanagaraj, Wamiqa Gabbi, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy and Guru Somasundaram feature in the film, which is streaming on SunNXT from September 4.

For those who prefer their weekend drama inside a courtroom, The Court follows Yazhini, a talented young lawyer with a stammer who has spent much of her life in the shadow of her accomplished father. The Tamil courtroom drama explores the personal and professional hurdles she faces as she tries to find her footing in the demanding legal world. It began streaming on JioHotstar on September 4.

Things get considerably darker with Unmadham, a Malayalam psychological crime thriller starring Kunchacko Boban and Lijomal Jose. The story follows a police constable who reopens a long-unsolved case after discovering clues that hint at a supernatural connection. What begins as an investigation soon takes an increasingly unsettling turn. The film is available on SonyLIV from September 4.

Korean Kanakaraju takes a lighter route, although not without a few scares. The Telugu horror comedy follows a carefree youngster whose life is thrown into unexpected territory after he falls in love with a Korean girl. Romance, comedy and horror collide as the unusual relationship leads to a series of unexpected situations. The film started streaming on Netflix on September 4.

Rounding off the line-up is Mayday, a Cold War-set action comedy that puts a US Navy pilot behind enemy lines. Stranded during a secret mission, he is forced to team up with an unlikely ally, an ex-KGB agent as the pair attempt to find a way home. Blending espionage, action and comedy, the film is available on Apple TV+ from September 4.

With six titles across drama, crime, courtroom, psychological thriller, horror comedy and action, the weekend’s OTT line-up leaves viewers with just one difficult decision: what to stream first?
