Disney+ updates terms to allow ads across all subscription tiers
Premium plan can now include promotions before and after playback under revised terms
MUMBAI: The ad break may be getting a little harder to escape, with Disney+ updating its subscriber agreement to clarify that promotional content, sponsorships and advertisements can appear across all of its subscription plans.
The change came to light after Disney+ sent subscribers emails outlining updates to its terms. The revised agreement states that all service plans may include promotional content, sponsorships and advertisements before or after playback, as well as within channels, live and as-live programming, special events and certain third-party services.
That wording marks a notable shift for subscribers on the platform’s higher-priced tier, which has traditionally been positioned as an ad-free option.
Disney+ currently has two standalone plans referenced in the updated terms. The Basic tier costs $11.99 a month and already carries advertising. The Premium plan costs $18.99 a month or $189.99 a year and continues to be presented as offering “no ads”.
However, the revised agreement appears to give Disney+ room to place promotional material around Premium content, even if advertising does not necessarily interrupt a film or episode midway through playback.
That distinction is important. The updated language does not state that Disney+ will suddenly insert conventional commercial breaks into every movie or series. Instead, it expands the circumstances in which promotional content can appear, particularly before and after playback.
For subscribers, the practical impact remains less clear. The revised agreement does not specify how frequently such promotions might appear on individual plans or whether the change will lead to a broader rollout of advertising on Premium.
There is one apparent exception: Disney+ Junior Mode. Profiles using the child-focused experience will not receive advertisements or promotional content, according to Disney+’s guidance.
The change comes as streaming platforms continue to experiment with advertising beyond traditional lower-priced ad-supported tiers. Disney+ last increased its prices in October 2025, adding another layer to the evolving economics of the service.
For now, the updated terms appear to change the fine print more than the viewing experience itself. But for Premium subscribers who paid for an ad-free environment, the wording makes one thing clearer: the line between “ad-free” and “promotion-free” is no longer quite as sharp.
