Baar Baar Dekho soundtrack completes 10 years of musical staying power
Kala Chashma, Nachde Ne Saare and Sau Aasmaan remain playlist favourites a decade later
MUMBAI: Some soundtracks age like fine wine; Baar Baar Dekho’s has simply refused to leave the dance floor. As Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif’s Baar Baar Dekho completes 10 years, its Zee Music soundtrack is getting another look, not merely as a film album, but as a collection of songs that have managed to stick around across weddings, parties, romance playlists and late-night listening.
Released alongside the 2016 film, the album found its sweet spot by offering a little something for almost every mood. “Kala Chashma”, “Nachde Ne Saare”, “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan”, “Dariya” and “Sau Aasmaan” each developed lives of their own, with several continuing to surface regularly a decade later.
At the loud end of the spectrum is “Kala Chashma”, which went far beyond being just another Bollywood party track. Amar Arshi, Badshah and Neha Kakkar brought the vocals, with lyrics by Amrik Singh and Kumaar, while the Punjabi-rooted song was given a Bollywood makeover. Its instantly recognisable hook, pounding beat and the energetic pairing of Katrina and Sidharth turned it into a party staple that still needs little introduction.
Then comes “Sau Aasmaan”, the album’s feel-good romantic number. Composed by Amaal Mallik, written by Kumaar and sung by Armaan Malik and Neeti Mohan, the song captures the buoyant rush of falling for someone without tipping into overly dramatic romance. Its bright, breezy sound makes it equally at home on a romantic playlist or whenever a mood needs lifting.
For something quieter, “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan” takes the volume down several notches. Composed and sung by Jasleen Royal alongside Prateek Kuhad, the track brought an understated indie-pop texture to the mainstream Bollywood soundtrack. Its simplicity and emotional warmth gave it an intimate quality that has helped it endure, particularly on late-night and reflective playlists.
If there is one track that practically comes with its own wedding invitation, it is “Nachde Ne Saare”. Composed by Jasleen Royal and sung by Royal, Harshdeep Kaur and Siddharth Mahadevan, with lyrics by Aditya Sharma, the song blends Punjabi wedding energy with an easy, celebratory rhythm. A sangeet, baraat or family dance floor can still find room for it.
And then there is “Dariya”, which occupies the album’s more wistful corner. Written, composed and sung by Arko, the song leans into longing, distance and the desire to be reunited with someone. Its soulful melody gives the soundtrack an emotional counterweight to its louder dance numbers.
That balance may be the secret behind the album’s staying power. Ten years on, Baar Baar Dekho’s soundtrack can still move from party mode to romance, wedding celebrations to quiet introspection without missing a beat, proving that some Bollywood songs do not simply make playlists; they make themselves at home in them.
