BARC week 19: Dangal back as most watched channel; SET re-enters across genres list

Sun TV dropped to third place, SPN reappeared at ninth rank

BENGALURU: Enterr 10 TV’s Hindi GEC Dangal topped Broadcast Audience Research Council of India’s (BARC) weekly list of top 10 channels across genres in week 19 of 2019 ( Saturday, 4 May 2019 to Friday, 10 May 2019, week under review). Sony Pictures Network India (SPN) flagship Hindi GEC Sony Entertainment Television (SET) re-entered BARC’s weekly across genres list in week 19 of 2019.

There were six Hindi GECs two Tamil GECs and one channel each from the sports and Telugu genres that comprised BARC’s weekly list of top 10 channels during the week under review. From the networks’ perspective, there were three channels each from Star India and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd Zeel), and one channel each from Enterr 10 Television, SPN, Sun TV Network and Viacom18  in the list for week 19 of 2019.

As mentioned above, Enterr 10 TV’s Hindi GEC Dangal climbed to first rank in week 19 of 2019 with 900.282 million weekly impressions as compared to second rank and  993.650 million weekly impressions in week 18. Dangal also headed BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 Hindi GECs in the combined urban and rural Hindi speaking market -HSM (U+R) and HSM (R).  Dangal was ranked seventh in BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U). An Indian mythology programme on Dangal  –Mahima Shanidev Ki was in BARC’s list of  Top 5 Hindi GEC programmes based on average rating across all original airings in the week in HSM (U+R). Further, three programmes on Dangal – the above mentioned Mahima Shanidev Ki, Ramayan and  Baba Aiso Var Dhundo were also among the top 5 Hindi GEC programmes in HSM (R).

Also climbing up a place to second rank was Star India’s Hindi sports channel Star Sports 1 Hindi with 840.222 million weekly impressions in week 19 as compared to third rank and 888.814 million weekly impressions in the previous week. Star Sports 1 Hindi also headed BARC’s weekly list of top 5 sports channels in week 19 of 2019 and all the five top programmes in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 sports programmes based on average rating across all original airings in the week were aired on it.

Dropping two ranks to third place in week 19 of 2019 was the Sun TV Network’s flagship Tamil GEC Sun TV with 810.886 million weekly impressions as compared to first rank and 1013.848 million weekly impressions in the previous week. Sun TV also headed BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Tamil channels in the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry markets and four of the top 5 Tamil programmes in this market based on average rating across all original airings in the week were aired on Sun TV.

Channels ranked fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth in week 18 of 2019 retained the same ranks in week 19 of 2019.

Zeel’s Hindi GEC Big Magic was ranked fourth in week 19 of 2019 with 736.039 million weekly impressions as compared to 740.054 million weekly impressions in week 18. Big Magic was ranked second in BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U+R) and HSM (R).  Big Magic was ranked eighth in BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U).

Star India’s flagship Telugu GEC Star Maa was ranked fifth in week 19 of 2019 with 660.480 million weekly impressions as compared to 661.992 million weekly impressions in the previous week. Star Maa was also ranked first in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Telugu GECs in the Andhra Pradesh/Telangana markets and four of the five programmes in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Telugu programmes based on average rating across all original airings in the week in these markets were aired on Star Maa.

At sixth rank was Star India’s flagship Hindi GEC Star Plus with 658.163 million weekly impressions as compared to 649.452 million weekly impressions in week 18. Star Plus was also ranked third, fourth and first in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U+R), HSM (R) and HSM (U) respectively. The reboot of Balaji Telefilm’s  Indian soap opera Kasauti Zindagi Kay on Star Plus was amongst BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Hindi GEC programmes on average rating across all original airings in the week in HSM (U+R) and HSM (U). Besides, the Indian musical television series Kulfi Kumar Bajewala on Star Plus was also amongst BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Hindi GEC programmes on average rating across all original airings in the week in HSM (U).

At seventh rank was Zeel’s flagship Hindi GEC Zee TV with 567.593 million weekly impressions in week 19 of 2019 as compared to 594.282 million weekly impressions in week 18. Zee TV was ranked fourth in HSM (U+R) and HSM (U) and was ranked third in HSM (R). The Balaji Telefilms-produced Kumkum Bhagya its spinoff  Kundali Bhagya aired on Zee TV were among the top 5 Hindi GEC programmes based on average rating across all original airings in the week in HSM (U+R), HSM (R) and HSM (U).

Viacom18’s flagship Hindi GEC was ranked eighth in week 19 of 2019 with 523.537 million weekly impressions as compared to 519.786 million weekly impressions in week 18. Colors was also ranked fifth in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U+R) and HSM (R)  and was ranked third in HSM (U). The Balaji Telefilms-produced supernatural fantasy show Naagin-3 aired on Colors was present in BARC’s list of top 5 Hindi GEC programmes based on average rating across all original airings in the week in HSM (U+R) and HSM (U).

Entering BARC’s weekly list of top 10 channels across genres was SET with 488.860 million weekly impressions in week 19 of 2019. SET was ranked sixth, seventh and fifth in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 Hindi GECs for week 19 of 2019 in HSM (U+R), HSM (R) and HSM (U) respectively.

Moving down a place to tenth rank in week 19 of 2019 was Zeel’s flagship Tamil GEC Zee Tamil with 488.860 million weekly impressions as compared to rank 9 and 498.220 million weekly impressions in week 18. Zee Tamil was ranked third in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Tamil channels in the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry markets. This indicates that Zee Tamil probably has a bigger audience outside this market hence it has overtaken the viewership second ranked Tamil channel in the Tamil Nadu/Puducherry markets. One of  the top 5 Tamil programmes in the Tamil Nadu/Puducherry market based on average rating across all original airings in the week, ranked one actually, (Sembaruthi) ,was aired on Zee Tamil.
