CHENNAI: The BCCI today amended its constitution to do away with the zonal rotational policy for electing its president and allow a second term to office bearers subject to re-election.

The proposals were passed by more than three-fourth majority at a Special General Meeting, virtually paving the way for some of the senior officials to occupy or retain key positions in the Board.

The decision to do away with the zonal rotation policy means that East Zone, whose turn it was to nominate a president after N Srinivasan finished his tenure in September 2014 can nominate a suitable candidate from other zone if two state units from east propose that particular candidate‘s name.

In the new scenario also there was a chance of a contest but BCCI‘s trends show that decisions are more or less unanimous.

The decision allows Arun Jaitley to take over as the BCCI president from September 2014. Had the existing rule been in place, Jaitley who represents DDCA would have only been eligible in 2017 as it would be North Zone‘s turn then.

Another decision was to extend the tenure of office-bearers subject to re-election. This will give the likes of Dalmiya, Shashank Manohar, Srinivasan to get an additional tenure of three more years in the future.

This would also mean that Jaitley whose term comes to an end in 2017 can be re-elected and remain president for six straight years if the Northern units decide against nominating someone from a different zone.

Under the existing BCCI rules, no office bearer, barring the five VPs, are allowed to re-contest for the same post once they complete their three-year term.

MUMBAI: The Twenty20 cricket Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council has terminated the contract with its Hyderabad franchisee Deccan Chargers, ending the ambitious journey of the promoters of Deccan Chronicle Holdings who were dreaming of extending their core media business to other lines of growth opportunities including the high-profile cricket property.

The Council took this extreme step late Friday night on grounds of a breach of contract. The decision was taken at an emergency IPL governing council meeting in Chennai, it is learnt. The final call was taken by BCCI President N Srinivasan.

IPL will now call for bids for a new franchise on Saturday.

The termination of the Deccan Chargers contract is as surprising as the decision of the team owner DCHL on Thursday to reject the sole bid it received from PVP Ventures Ltd to buy the franchisee for Rs 9 billion.

BCCI?s working committee was expected to decide on the fate of Deccan Chargers at its scheduled meeting on Saturday.

Deccan Chargers had rejected the sole bid on grounds of unacceptable payment terms. PVP Ventures had offered to pay Rs 4.50 billion in cash and the remaining in instalments but without providing bank guarantees. The bank lenders of DCHL were insisting upon bank guarantees.

The BCCI, in a statement on Thursday, had said the bid by PVP Ventures met its eligibility and suitability criteria. "The bid was then reviewed by Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited which, in its discretion and with no role being played by BCCI, rejected the bid on the basis of the payment terms offered by the bidder."

  • BCCI meet on 15 Sept to decide on scrapping rotational policy

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to scrap the rotational policy of appointing president.

The BCCI has called for a Special General Meeting in Chennai on 15 September to make amendments to the clause that will allow candidates from any of the five zones to stand for future presidential elections.

N Srinivasan, the outgoing president of the board, is from South Zone. As per the current rotational policy, it is East Zone?s turn to send a president when Srinivasan completes his term in 2014.

The changes, it is believed, is being brought to pave the way for BJP leader and Delhi District Cricket Association president Arun Jaitley ascension to the top of BCCI hierarchy. Without amendment to rotational policy clause, Jaitley would have to wait till 2014, when the North Zone?s turn comes to appoint a president.

"As per the existing rule, a president has to be from a particular zone whose turn it is by rotation to take over the presidentship. The change sought to be made at the SGM is that the future presidential candidate may belong to any of the five zones, but only needs to be proposed and seconded by the zone whose turn it is," newswire PTI quotes BCCI sources as saying.

The move will strengthen the control of policians in the world?s richest cricket board which has been grappling with charges of financial misconduct in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Earlier, Congress leader and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla was appointed as IPL chairman.

MUMBAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today issued a show cause notice to the BCCI for alleged foreign exchange violations regarding the Indian Premier League (IPL)

The BCCI had accepted deposits of Rs 600 million for conducting the second season which had been shifted to South Africa. There was a performance deposit of Rs 200 million from Emerging Media Sporting Holdings Ltd, UK (bidding for IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals) and Rs 400 million from MSM Satellite (Singapore) Pte Ltd (bidding for TV broadcast contract).

The notices have been issued to former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, BCCI president N Srinivasan, former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah and HDFC Bank.

Reports add that in addition to imposition of penalties, the show cause notice also proposes confiscation of these deposits of Rs 600 million.

Rajasthan Royals CEO Raghu Iyer said, " This money was a performance deposit given before we won the franchise. We sent it from abroad as there was no company formed here. All parties who bid for a franchise had to deposit Rs. 200 million. The Enforcement Directorate had questioned us on this issue last year and we replied to them."
