MUMBAI: Google’s recently launched music streaming platform YouTube Music has surpassed its opponent Spotify by registering more downloads within a week of the launch.

Spotify, which launched in India a few weeks ago, claimed over a million users subscribed to its service within a week of its launch, while YouTube registered over 3 million downloads in the first week, according to the reports.

Google launched YouTube Music in India on 12 March, introducing a free ad-supported and a premium ad-free version with a subscription fee of Rs 99 per month. Soon after its launch, the company also marked its entry in the original video streaming market in India with the introduction of YouTube Originals.

Subscription for YouTube Music is priced at Rs 99 per month and YouTube Premium, which includes access to YouTube Originals is priced at Rs 129. Google is also offering a family subscription for Rs 149 per month which allows up to six members to share a single subscription.

In addition to getting an ad-free experience, YouTube Music subscription also allows you to play the music in the background and the ability to download music on your device for offline playback. Spotify is currently offering a one-month subscription for Rs 129.
