Google TV Freeplay adds on-demand library with 10,000-plus titles

MUMBAI: Free just got a little more flexible. Google TV Freeplay is moving beyond the channel-surfing model with a new on-demand library, giving viewers the option to pick a movie or show when they want rather than waiting for it to appear on a live channel.

The free, ad-supported service now offers more than 10,000 movies and TV shows without requiring a subscription. Google said the catalogue includes titles from studios such as A24 and Lionsgate, with films including Lady Bird and Seventeen Again, alongside programmes such as Hell’s Kitchen.

The on-demand offering sits alongside Freeplay’s existing live TV service, effectively giving the platform two ways to watch: tune into a channel or choose something from the catalogue.

Google has also expanded Freeplay’s live channel line-up to more than 300 channels, up from more than 250 in December 2025. The latest additions span news, sports, reality television and true crime, with channels including World of Love Island, Bloomberg TV+, Yahoo! Sports Network and The Martha Stewart Channel.

The interface has been redesigned to separate “Live TV” from “Free movies & shows”, allowing viewers to switch between scheduled programming and on-demand entertainment more easily.

Google said it will continue refreshing the on-demand catalogue throughout the year, suggesting the service is being positioned as more than a collection of free linear channels.

The expansion strengthens Freeplay’s presence in the FAST, or free ad-supported television, market, where platforms are increasingly combining traditional channel-based viewing with on-demand libraries.

The new on-demand feature begins rolling out from 12 August, giving Google TV users another reason to stay on the platform even when there is nothing worth watching on the live schedule.
