Jeff Liebenson is IAEL president

MUMBAI: The International Association of Entertainment Lawyers has announced that Jeff Liebenson of Herrick, Feinstein LLP in New York City, has been elected as its president.

Liebenson says, ?The IAEL has been a leader on entertainment issues for over 35 years. The industry is facing unprecedented commercial opportunities and legal challenges posed by the digital revolution in every segment of the media world ? music, TV, radio, newspapers, advertising and, of course, the Internet. The IAEL has the experience and strategic know-how needed to guide performers and entertainment companies as they confront those challenges.?

Liebenson is succeeding Eric Keyzer, who served as IAEL president for the past four years. Keyzer says, ?It has been an honour and pleasure to serve the IAEL as President and to lead it, stronger than ever, into this new decade. I am very pleased that my successor is a US lawyer as one of my strategies over the past four years has been to expand the scope of the IAEL to other continents than Europe. Entertainment law has been invented in the US and it is great to have Jeff Liebenson appointed as first US President of this organisation.?

The IAEL was founded in 1977 at Midem, the international trade fair of the music industry held in Cannes, France, following several years of informal seminars and discussion groups for Midem participants interested in the legal aspects of the entertainment industry. The IAEL fulfills a role for entertainment lawyers throughout the world, providing a specialist, international forum and knowledge exchange.

The organisation is marked by continuity of membership combined with a focus on emerging future issues. The IAEL publishes an annual volume of wide interest including contributions from leading legal and industry figures on a variety of compelling legal issues, which in recent years have included Celebrity (2005), Competition (2006), Private Copying (2007), User-Generated Content (edited by Mr. Liebenson in 2008), Multiple Rights Deals (2009) and Collective Rights Licensing at the ISP Level, which was released at this year?s Midem. The IAEL continues to conduct annual conferences at Midem and other events throughout the world.
