60 years ago on June 1944 the allies gathered on the shores of
Britain to invade German occupied France. This was one of the turning
points of the second world war.
CNN has announced that next month it will commemorate the occasion.
On 6 June the broadcaster will feature live and recorded coverage
from France. This will include the dawn ceremonies along the landing
beaches of Omaha, Juno, Gold,
Sword and Utah. The remembrance services at the numerous drop-zones
at which more than 23,000 British and American paratroopers landed
before
dawn on June 6 will also feature the fly-pasts, religious ceremonies
and wreath laying.
The coverage will also include a documentary,
Warsaw Rising: The Forgotten Soldiers of
World War II. The film uncovers the horror and betrayal of Warsaws
underground army of men, women and children who fought under brutal
conditions against the combined might of Hitlers army and
air force.
This airs on 5 June at 5:30 pm and on 6 June at 4:30 pm.
