Former New Zealand speedster Sir Richard Hadlee will feature on
Harsha Online – the interactive one-hour programme pioneered
by ESPN STAR Sports – presented by Harsha Bhogle. The show airs
at 12 am on 7 January on Star Sports.
Hadlee was known for his superb control of pace, swing and cut.
He gave New Zealand sides in 1970s a chance to hold their own against
the rest in an era dominated by fast bowlers. Even in the 1980s,
he inspired them to unprecedented success. He played many a match
winning innings but his bowling was his special talent, one that
he polished and perfected by hard work and a supreme dedication.
Hadlee has claimed 431 wickets in 86 tests at an average of 22.29.
He claimed 5 or more wickets in an innings on 36 occasions and 10
or more wickets in a match on 9 occasions. Hadlee was also the first
bowler to capture 400 test wickets. In the shorter version of the
game Hadlee has taken 158 wickets in 115 matches conceding 21.56
runs apiece.
Hadlee, who was awarded a knighthood in 1990 for his services to
cricket, scored 3,124 runs in 86 test matches at an average of 27.16.
Playing 115 one-dayers he scored 1,751 runs at an average of 21.61
in the shorter version of the game. He retired from cricket in 1990
after serving New Zealand cricket for 18 years.
