Sania Mirza, the young, vivacious tennis star, who won the Girls'
Doubles Wimbledon this year, will be featured on Radio City 91 FM's
programme Josh 91, at 9 am on 16 August.
According to a company release, in a heart-to-heart with RJ Suniana
Lal, the 'cool' Hyderabad girl speaks about her dreams and achievements.
Mirza, who has won 21 India Tennis Federation titles till date,
says she is hoping to break into the women's Top 50 in a couple
of years.
The programme starts off with Mirza reminiscing her brush with
tennis when she was just six-years-old. "At first my coach
thought I was too young, but I said I wanted to play just for fun.
A year later, he called my parents to tell them that he saw great
potential in me and that's how it all started."
Mirza's passion for swimming is much-talked about. However, in
the show Mirza says she knew she couldn't be a professional swimmer.
"In fact I never thought I could make it in tennis either,
at that moment in time," she says after some consideration.
She says she is quite encouraged to note that the Indian Tennis
Association is organising plenty of national and international tournaments
for today's players. "Today's kids get more exposure from these
tournaments," she opines.
Mirza thanks her parents for the support they give her. She say,
"My parents never pressurised me. In fact they used to sit
for every practice session. They have always supported me and I
don't think I could have made it without them."
The girl's is confident to reach international standards in few
years. "Indian Players are coming up and I think we do stand
a good chance," she says in the programme. However Mirza thinks
Indians are not physically tough as the Europeans.
About her winning the Wimbledon in 2003, Mirza says with childlike
charm, that she was trembling when she returned the serve in the
match point. She also speaks about her exercise schedule, her education,
profession, and concludes the programme with an advice to sprouting
tennis players.
