Nat Geo goes into exploration mood with Inca mummies

(Posted on 30 May 2002 2:00 pm)

National Geographic Channel (NGC) makes an attempt to go medieval with a series on the Inca mummies next week.

The Inca empire was possibly the most organized civilization in South America. Their economic system, distribution of wealth, artistic manifestations and architecture impressed the first of the Spanish chroniclers.

The salvage operation was started by Peruvian-born archaeologist Guillermo Cock in 1999, of what is now believed to be the second largest excavated Inca cemetry in Peru. Following this in Peru, experts have found many such 'mummy bundles' under a schoolyard which not only hold bodies but priceless artefacts revealing more on the mighty Inca.

NGC explores facts about this interesting civilization with its show Inca Mummies - Secrets Of A Lost Empire to be aired on 9 June at 8 pm.
