The main protagonist of the serial is Niyati, enacted by Indira Krishnan, an investigative journalist and a columnist for a well known women's magazine. Her column in the publication, Akhri Khat is not only widely read, but also well appreciated by women serving time in jail. With the help of her lawyer friend Priyanka, played by Seema Kar, she meets these women as her mission is to pen a book on their lives.

On the job, she encounters several problems and pressures and even receives threatening calls. Undaunted, she carries on with her work. The serial also focusses on the personal life of Niyati and the problems she encounters which affect her life.
