HBO uses collegian 'Election' to satirise America's political process

(Posted on 24 June 2002 5:10 pm)

Academy award nominee Election will be part of HBO's Saturday nights package on 6 July.

The satire, that bagged an Oscar nomination for its perceptive screenplay, deals with a high school electing the president for its student body. Reese Witherspoon plays the overtly ambitious Tracy Flick who expects to win the election comfortably. One of the teachers played by Mathew Broderick (Addicted To Love) aims at putting a hurdle in her plans through Chris Kelin (American Pie), a student resident.

Complicating the issue is Chris' gay sister who becomes the third candidate claiming that after being elected she will dismantle the student body permanently so that "we would never have to go to another stupid election assembly."

Election airs on HBO at 9.30 pm on 6 July.
