NGC airs dramatic Kabul zoo animal rescue story on 17 June post-9/11

(Posted on 17 June 2002 3:00 pm)

Circa December 2001: Afghanistan is in the thick of attacks from the coalition against terror, with American planes swooping down and carpet bombing various cities.

Circa: 2002: NGC's Hayden Turner travels to the war-ravaged nation, with a singular objective - a mission of mercy saving animals at the Kabul zoo. And all this has been captured on camera by the team who travelled with him in the show The Kabul Zoo Rescue, which airs on 17 June at 21:00 hours and on 18 June at 01:00 hours (IST).

Turner, a former zookeeper, helped relocate animals in danger on that trip with the aid of international relief workers. Among the animals that viewers will not forget include Donatella the Asiatic black bear, whose nose was repeatedly beaten and its tip sliced off by zoo visitors, or the aged and once-regal Marjan, known as the lion of Kabul, who survived a vengeful grenade attack and years of malnutrition only to die at the point of salvation.

Though the devastation is heartbreaking, this ultimately inspiring story explores the importance of symbols of hope in times of darkness, the will to survive, and the extraordinary connections between humans and animals.

So tune into NGC tonight, to watch some breathtaking footage of Turner at work in the Kabul zoo.
