The 'Laureus World Sports Awards 2002', the Oscars of the
sporting world, will be telecast on Star World next Saturday.
The award is recognised as the premier honour on the international
sporting calendar and is unique as it pays tribute to the
world's best sportsmen and women cutting across disciplines
and nations.
The awards have a range of categories including, 'World
Sportsman', 'World Sportswoman', and 'World Team of the
Year'. The
year's nominees for 'World Sportsman' include: Lance Armstrong,
cycling (USA); Maurice Greene, athletics (USA) and Michael
Schumacher, F-1 (Germany). The honorees for 'World Sportswoman'
are: Jennifer Capriati, tennis (USA); Inge de Bruijn, swimming
(Netherlands) and Stacy Dragila, athletics (USA).
The ceremony will be hosted by Eriq La Salle and guests
invited include some of the world's top sportsmen, sportswomen
and celebrities from the fields of entertainment, fashion,
film and music. Those who will mark their presence at the
event include Natalie Cole, Sean Connery, Michael Douglas
and Morgan Freeman.
The awards air on 15 June at 10 pm on Star World.
