Former
Australian prime minister Paul Keating is CNN’s Talk Asia
guest this weekend.
In the half hour interview, Keating tells host Lorraine
Hahn about his time in public office, political life in
Australia, his hobbies and his family. The show airs on
6 July at 9:30 pm with repeats on 7 July at 8:30 am and
6:30 pm and on 8 July at 11:30 am and 10:30 pm ( Hong Kong
time).
Born in Sydney, Keating spent 13 years at the highest levels
of power in Canberra. As Australia’s Treasurer, he famously
warned the country that it could become a "banana republic"
if it did not engage in the global economy. He also prescribed
the tough medicine that many credit with revitalizing the
domestic economy. Elected Prime Minister in 1991, Keating
tells of his attempts to bring about the greater integration
of his country into Asia, a break from the British monarchy
and a resolution of past injustices against Australia’s
aborigines.
Presently Visiting Professor of Public Policy at the University
of New South Wales, the 58 year-old father of four also
talks about his family and discusses his love of classical
music and collecting antiques, including Asian art works.
