National Geographic's show Taxi Ride will examine
the contrasting cultures of Hollywood and Mumbai tonight
at 9 pm.
Each episode of the show features a hundred-dollar bill,
and a faceless narrator. Seen through the lens of cab windows,
the show claims to transcend the typical travel show by
offering exciting dialogue with the driver, human connections,
and a look at transportation around the world.
In Hollywood, the channel visits Griffith Park, the setting
for some of cinema's most famous scenes, including one from
Rebel Without a Cause. On Rodeo Drive, the cab driver
points out shops so exclusive that their doors are locked
and shopping is by appointment only. Finally, the narrator
visits a cemetery where Marilyn Monroe was buried.
The second part of the show comes to Mumbai in the company
of cab driver Pandey. The narrator visits one of the world's
largest clothes-washing facilities near Mahalaxmi as well
as the infamous Chor bazaar.
Tomorrow, the show puts viewers in a jazzy mood by exploring
New Orleans. The narrator passes through the French Quarter
and over the Mississippi. He catches up with Joe Prejean,
for 30 years the trombone player in the band that backed
singer Al Hirt. The episode also visits Singapore - a city
in transition, balancing traditional values and customs
with the competitive world of high finance.
