Star
World ends the month with a two-hour show Iron Chef USA.
The show is a rerun of two one-hour American specials, which
draw inspiration from the Japanese culinary show Iron Chef
that stopped production in 1999. It has chefs preparing
a multi course menu within an hour. The menu is based on
their 'theme' ingredient, which the competing chefs discover
only after the show has begun. A panel of four judges, who
judge the meal based on originality, presentation, and taste,
tastes the finished meals.
The show will be aired on 31 January at 6:30 pm and again
at 10 pm. It will be repeated on 1 February at 9:30 am and
on 3 February at 1:30 pm. Commentators will discuss the
dishes being made during the hour. The gourmet cuisine is
cooked under the supervision of 'The Chairman' William Shatner
of Star Trek fame.
The first installment of the show called Showdown in
Las Vegas features Todd English who owns 13 restaurants
in America competing with chef Kerry Simon of Prime at the
Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. The show started in Japan in
October 1993 as a 30-minute programme on Sunday nights.
The show was expanded to an hour after its ratings soared.
The American version debuted on UPN in November.
The American version has however been criticized as a poor
imitation, with skeptics maintaining that the show reduces
talent to a circus act. One will have to wait and see if
the Indian audience finds the show appetizing.
