Dive into the flames on NGC

(Posted on 18 January 2002 5:50 pm)

National Geographic Channel will start a series called Into The Flames from 26 January.

At 10 pm every week, it examines the havoc fire causes in different situations. The first episode titled Fire in the Sky, deals with the phenomenon of aeroplane fires and scrutinises how firefighters fight them. The show will go through the early tests conducted in the 1950s to understand how fire in a plane kills passengers as well as recent airline disasters.

The next episode on 2 February deals with Fire in the City. A perceptible increase in flammable material in homes in big cities has increased the threat and speed of fires dramatically over the years. The episode looks at the changing challenges faced by firefighters in large cities around the world.Recent large urban fires will illustrate the destructive effects, speed and the various elements of a fire. This documentary visits the NIST in Washington D.C., where scientists are studying the mechanics of a fire, from a burning cigarette to a raging inferno.

The film also looks at the 'psychology' of people during a fire, a condition called 'commitment' where people continue with shopping or working even though there is a fire raging in the room. The challenge faced by urban firefighters is illustrated by the Back Draft and Flashover, two unique fire phenomena associated with closed structures such as buildings. Training firefighters to combat these fires requires understanding the various stages of its growth and reading the symptoms. The firemen's facility in Indianapolis does just that. Finally, look at the unique methods the Tokyo fire department uses to cope with fires in the city's skyscrapers.
