NGC delves into mysteries of sex, lies and seduction this Valentine's day

(Posted on 14 February 2002 11:02 am)

Love is possibly the most positive emotion an individual can experience. To celebrate the spirit of being in love the National Geographic Channel will show a three hour special Sex, Lies & Seduction today from 8 to 11pm.

An official release states that the National Geographic Channel will examine the universal rollercoaster ride that is love. The series digs deep into the human psyche to answer love's most vexing questions: Is It Simply Chemistry? Is There Really Love at First Sight? Why Can Romantic Love Be So Painful? How Can We Help to Make It Last?

The programme consists of vivid and informative graphics, dramatised scenes and interviews with love experts such as neurochemists, anthropologists, psychologists and comedians, classic movie clips and the true experiences of real-life lovers. In this manner Sex, Lies & Seduction edges ever closer to a true understanding of this overpowering human emotion.

The series examines the three different facets of the emotion. Falling in Love paints a vivid picture of the first moments of love. Being in Love goes deep inside the human animal to find out why love can lead to both ecstatic pleasure and unbearable pain. Finally Staying in Love examines the difficulties involved in making love last, posing the question: 'Are humans really meant to have long-term love relationships?'

In Falling in Love the series looks at what happens when two people succumb to romantic love. We meet an imaginary couple and follow them as they begin the heightened journey of love, moving from the first glances to the first touches and the intricate chemistry that pervades their relationship. We also hear from scientists about the intricacies of our senses at work, and the love chemicals that combine to draw us into the vortex of romance.

In Being in Love the series examines the highs and lows of love with a look at how our imaginary couple's relationship is changing over time. We also meet some practitioners of plural marriages and hear from one of the world's leading neuroscientists on why love is not just romance but can also lead to domestic abuse or even attempted murder of a US president.

Staying in Love focuses on the innate human need for long-term emotional connection, and what it takes to make love last. We learn about the development of the limbic system, which allows humans to emotionally code experiences, and about the evolution of pair bonds. The programme also examines the alleged genetic promiscuity of men, the fidelity of same sex couples and the view that companionship and communication are more important in a relationship than sex.

The National Geographic Channel claims to be distributed to over 32 million 24-hour homes and over 50 million day-part cable homes in Asia Pacific. National Geographic Channel Asia is a business enterprise of National Geographic Television, NBC, and Fox Entertainment Group.
