| Though TV broadcasters have been raising strong objections,
the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will go ahead with
allowing unlicensed wireless services to use vacant airwaves between
TV stations.
The plan will allow unlicensed wireless Wi-Fi operators to use
unused frequencies between channels 2 and 51 in each market, provided
that they don't disrupt existing stations. The proposal is expected
to spring an array of robust and less expensive wireless Internet
services by 2006.
The move would help providers and equipment makers to use the TV
spectrum for better penetration at lower costs as fewer antennas
are needed then.
