| Scientific-Atlanta (SA) has announced an Ethernet
module that can efficiently and affordably delivers six channels of
fiber optic Ethernet connectivity for supporting commercial services.
The Ethernet module for the Proteus(tm) node return digital solution
allows cable operators to offer over 100Mb of voice or data services
using their existing cable infrastructure and standard HFC products.
SA supplies digital content distribution systems, transmission
networks for broadband access to the home, digital interactive set-tops
and subscriber systems designed for video, high-speed Internet and
voice over IP (VoIP) networks, and worldwide customer service and
support.
This solution allows cable operators to have the potential to deliver
new revenue generating services to business customers within their
existing network rather than incurring the additional costs of building
parallel data or voice networks to provide these services.
"There are multiple financial and service benefits for the
cable operator from the Proteus nodes and this new Ethernet module.
They provide an excellent entry point into commercial services for
the cable operator for a minimal capital expenditure. The ability
to serve closely located concentrations of business customers from
a single point should assist cable operators in developing an effective
business model for launching commercial services," Scientific-Atlanta
vice president and general manager of emerging businesses is quoted
as saying in reports.
