Royal Philips Electronics and SRS Labs have announced a license
agreement to integrate SRS Labs' audio technologies into Philips'
semiconductors solutions for the worldwide television market. Under
the terms of the agreement, SRS Labs' TruSurround and its
flagship SRS 3D audio are now available for license by original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Philips will start shipping SRS
Labs' technology with its UOCIII (Ultimate One Chip Third Generation)
series television ICs this month.
Philips claims to be the market leader in one-chip TV products,
producing approximately one million units per week. SRS Labs develops
audio technologies for the worldwide TV market. Under this license
agreement, Philips' semiconductor customers will have access to
SRS Labs' technologies.
The new UOCIII Ultimate One Chip featuring SRS Labs'
technologies is a versatile universal signal processor for low-and-mid-range
TV applications. An official release informs that this new solution
permits the entire signal processing for a single scan stereo TV
to be completed in just one device, from the tuner to the picture
tube. The UOCIII operates in any country in the world and offers
a global solution for TruSurround and SRS 3D for TV set manufacturers.
Philips has stated that SRS Labs' audio technology offers everything
its customers need to create sound emerging from the screen that
can be experienced in the entire living room. Philips says that
it is committed to providing customers with appealing features based
on proven one-chip solutions. This enables it to launch new products
with these features. The incorporation of SRS Labs' audio technology
is yet another step to bring sophisticated audio experience via
affordable TV sets to a large audience, while offering the customers
a competitive edge.
SRS Labs' namesake technology Sound Retrieval System (SRS) is a
3D audio enhancement technologies. Due to the width of some of the
small television sets, the speakers may have very little separation.
SRS widens the sound field and makes it appear as though the speakers
are further apart. The company's patented TruSurround is a powerful
audio technology that provides listeners with the unprecedented
realistic effect of multichannel surround sound through a single
pair of stereo speakers.
With the increasing popularity of DVD players and the growing library
of surround sound television programming, more and more content
is delivered in surround sound, but the majority of households in
the world do not have a multi-speaker home theater playback system.
With TruSurround, television viewers have the ability to enjoy
a powerful surround sound type experience from either the internal
television speakers or a two-speaker stereo playback system, states
the release.
