The Digital Media business unit of Trident Microsystems has announced the launch of its second-generation TV encoder, TVXPRESS TM II (TVX2).

California based Trident claims to be a world-wide leader in developing cutting-edge digital video processing technology for the consumer digital video marketplace. An official release says that the new product takes advantage of Trident's Digital Media expertise in digital video technology. TVX2 is a versatile NTSC/PAL TV encoder chip equipped with an advanced, programmable multi-tap TV de-flicker and UV chroma filter. TVX2 provides sharp text, superb graphics, and vivid video quality. A the same time, dot crawl and colour bleeding are reduced considerably, the release says.

TVX2 enables Entertainment PC applications such as 3D gaming, web TV, video conferencing to be displayed on television. TVX2 is also an optimal NTSC/PAL TV video companion solution for all Trident graphic accelerator chipsets. These include the new low-power integrated graphics and core logic chipset, CyberALADDiN-P4 and the low-power 3D graphic solution, CyberBLADE XP2.

In addition, TVX2 claims to be a key component for set top box or DVD players, where digital RGB and YUV are converted to TV signals. Trident's TVX2 is an integrated TV-Out filter/Digital TV encoder companion chip for Trident's graphic controllers as well as other third party graphic controllers that are equipped with the CCIR/RGB-style digital video interface.

TVX2 supports inputs with YUV422 (CCIR 656) format, RGB24/16 format, and a wide range of input resolutions in addition to the standard VESA resolutions. TVX2 supports NTSC-M, NTSC-4.43, NTSC-EIA (Japan), and PAL-B, D, G, H, I, N, M standards. With the help of three independent DACs, TVX2 supports S-video and Composite-video outputs simultaneously (S-video + CVBS), or supports SCART (RGB + C-SYNC) outputs.

TVX2 claims to be compliant with Macrovision 7.1.L1 copy protection for NTSC and PAL. TVX2 is available in both cost- effective 44 LQFP and space-saving 48 TQFP packages.
