Clear Channel is using Packeteer's PacketShaper IP bandwidth
management system as the basis of the Delta V Internet Accelerator
Service; an innovative new broadband Internet service being
rolled out to 18 markets this year.
Clear Channel claims to be a global leader in the out-of-home
advertising industry with radio and television stations,
outdoor displays, and entertainment venues in 65 countries
around the world. The PacketShaper with ISP Edition software
and Dynamic Subscriber Bandwidth Provisioning (DSBP) allocates
IP bandwidth automatically by mapping a subscriber's traffic
profile (e.g. source/destination IP address, traffic type,
URL) to a prescribed policy. It is a scalable and easy-to-deploy
solution that actively provisions minimum and maximum bandwidth
to thousands of concurrent Internet access subscribers,
claims an official release.
By being able to precisely allocate downstream bandwidth,
Delta V ensures subscribers equal access to bandwidth, guarantees
service levels and enables broadcast TV and Internet data
services to co-exist without interference. The Delta V service
uses a latent portion of the Digital Television (DTV) broadcast
spectrum to provide high-speed download connections up to
256 Kbps and works in conjunction with a user's dial-up
modem upstream link and existing ISP.
The service is simple to install and requires a special
Delta V ASTC DTV receiver and over-the-air television antenna
attached to the user's PC. Upstream and downstream connections
are synchronised through a Delta V relay server within Clear
Channel's network. Delta V's innovative DTV-based service
brings high-speeds Internet downloads to residential and
business users whose locations preclude them from other
forms of broadband Internet access, such as DSL or Hybrid
Fiber Coax (HFC) cable, that are dependent on specific wiring
infrastructure or distance requirements.
