Scientific-Atlanta has announced that it
will shortly launch a new Transis rate compressor. An official
release infroms that the sophisticated transrating solution
will enable reductions in the bit rate of programs received
in the headend. Therefore cable operators will be able to
get more revenue-generating services into one multiplexed
transport stream.
The product will be introduced at the NAB
Show in Las Vegas taking place from 8-11 April. By optimising
bandwidth usage, the Transis rate compressor will help operators
reduce their overall transmission cost.
The Transis rate compressor will be able to handle a flexible
number of channels and will therefore be well suited for
applications within digital terrestrial television networks,
digital cable headends and playout centers. It will also
be useful as a rate limiter for IP-based distribution networks
because it can limit the rates of individual programs independently
the release states.
Employing new IntelliRate advanced transrating technology
and algorithms, the Transis rate compressor will offer a
higher degree of bit rate reduction than certain conventional
transrating equipment currently available, while maintaining
optimum video output quality.
The new Transis rate compressor will be a stand-alone device
focused on transrating which, when combined with BarcoNet's
Pegasus re-multiplexer and TS/SI processor, will offer operators
a powerful solution for efficient statistical re-multiplexing.
Placing the transrating function in a single, separate box
will considerably reduce complexity, make upgrades easy
and cost-effective, and offer operators freedom of choice.
The open design of the Transis rate compressor will allow
it to work with existing MPEG- or DVB-compliant re-multiplexers
and transport streams.
