Cablelabs
has certified 12 more DOCSIS 1.1 high-speed cable modems
at the conclusion of the third certification wave for DOCSIS
1.1 testing, adding to a growing supply of second-generation
interoperable high-speed devices.
The
companies receiving DOCSIS 1.1 certification status in the
latest wave of testing include Accton, Arris, Askey, Conexant,
Quanta, Samsung, Scientific-Atlanta, Tellabs, Terrayon,
Thomson, and Xrostech, an official release states.
CableLabs
has also qualified two Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTSs)
from Arris and Riverstone.
The 1.1 modems are compatible with existing DOCSIS 1.0 equipment
and will work on cable systems alongside modems that will
be certified under future versions of DOCSIS. There are
now a total of 21 DOCSIS 1.1 modems certified, and four
CMTSs that are qualified the release states.
Strategically,
DOCSIS 1.1 opens a technological doorway to augmented revenue
streams for cable providers. It does so by enabling the
existence of high-speed Internet service tiers, via techniques
known as data fragmentation and quality-of-service (QoS).
DOCSIS 1.1 enables cable operators to deliver twice the
level of functionality while reducing operating costs by
half. To date, 203 DOCSIS 1.0 modems have received certification
status and 26 CMTS have been qualified by CableLabs.
CableLabs is a research and development consortium of cable
television system operators representing North and South
America.
