ESPN
will
use Polycom's industry-leading ViewStation FX group video
communications systems during the 2002 National Football
League draft broadcast.
This
will enable the sports broadcaster to conduct live interviews
with coaches and key personnel from 31 NFL team sites during
the live television broadcast of the 2002 NFL Draft, which
will be shown on 20 and 21 April on ESPN worldwide as well
as ESPN2 in the US, according to an official release.
The
2002 broadcast represents the broadest use ever of video
communications technology during ESPN's coverage of the
NFL Draft. This year's broadcast will also be the first
time ESPN will incorporate IP (H.323) video communications
for the interviews, with eight of the team offices connecting
over IP, and the remaining 23 connecting over ISDN (H.320)
lines.
ESPN
will also debut the use of interactive video communications
systems in the working 'draft rooms' of a select number
of teams, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at what
takes place during the draft from a team's perspective.
The
31 teams will use a Polycom ViewStation FX, the industry's
leading group video communications system, which will enable
them to participate directly from their team headquarters,
saving the channel time and money, says the release.
ESPN's
coverage of the 2001 NFL Draft was recently nominated for
an upcoming Sports Emmy Award in the 'Technical Team Studio'
category with video conferencing being a key component of
the entry. The use of interactive video communications will
save ESPN production costs.
Polycom's ViewStation claims to deliver the quality and
performance of high-end video conferencing systems at an
affordable price.
