CableLabs
has issued specifications for CableHome 1.0, providing manufacturers
with a common approach to distribution of broadband services
inside consumers’ homes. It is anticipated that certification
testing of CableHome 1.0 products will begin in the latter
half of this year.
CableHome
products claim to offer convenient home networking solutions,
including hands off provisioning of the residential gateway
device as well as tools that enable the cable operator to
assist in diagnosing and resolving home networking issues.
In addition, CableHome 1.0 provides secure configuration
and on-going management of residential gateways such that
cable operators can create the home networking experience
that is optimal for their subscribers.
CableHome
1.0 also offers firewall management and upgrade functionality
to help ensure a secure home networked environment. As in
the specification phase of all of its interoperability projects,
CableLabs has received leadership from its cable operator
members and excellent support from suppliers to write the
CableHome 1.0 interface specifications that are freely available
on the Internet for manufacturers to use as a guide to build
equipment that would work with cable-delivered services.
These
interface specifications enable cable operators to assist
consumers with management of their home networks and provide
users with assistance ranging from installation to security.
CableHome 1.0 helps set the foundation for a managed network.
